TOEFL Test Dates 2026-2027: Exam Schedule, Registration and Booking Guide

You can register for the TOEFL in India by creating an account on the ETS website. There is no application process to go through with a local authority. Simply create an account, pick which version of the test you want to take and look for available tests.

How it works -

• Test centre: TOEFL iBT. Take the test at an authorised test centre on a date set by ETS. These dates are limited, so popular dates can fill up.
• TOEFL iBT Home Edition: Same test but taken on your own computer at home with remote supervision. The slots are generally more flexible.
• Flexible timing throughout the year: This is not an exam that you can take once per year. There will be multiple dates available throughout the year so you should ask yourself when the best date for you is.

How to choose a suitable date:

• Note your university application deadlines.
• Count backwards to allow time for score reporting and a possible retake.
• Check for available dates in your city or on the Home Edition.
• Choose an available slot that allows you enough time to prepare.

To learn more in detail, refer to our TOEFL Syllabus 2026 Guide.

Students generally look for TOEFL exam dates in Delhi or TOEFL test centers in Mumbai. Since TOEFL test center dates keep changing, it may happen that a particular date, mentioned in a blog, is no longer available. Below are instructions on how to find available dates for your major city.

Steps to verify the availability of the city:

Change is inevitable. ETS provides an option of changing or canceling a scheduled test; however, certain deadlines apply.

Important policies (make sure you check with ETS first):

• You should schedule or cancel at least 4 full days prior to your test date. For instance, for a Saturday test, the deadline is Tuesday.
• Cancellation done during the deadline period is subject to refund (50% of the test fee). Cancellation outside the deadline period does not qualify for a refund.
• Changing your schedule will require a fee. Fees for late registration and rescheduling are non-refundable once you have paid them.
• In case ETS itself cancels or changes your test, other policies will apply.

Our separate page on TOEFL test centres in India can help you plan travel and arrival.

Plans change. ETS allows you to reschedule or cancel a booked test, but strict deadlines apply. Key rules (confirm on ETS before acting):

• You must reschedule or cancel at least 4 full days before your test date. For example, for a Saturday test, the cut-off is Tuesday.
• Cancelling within the deadline generally earns a partial refund (50% of the base test fee). Cancelling after the deadline does not.
• Rescheduling carries a fee. Late registration fees and rescheduling fees already paid are generally not refunded.

• If ETS itself cancels or changes your test, different rules apply, and you are usually offered a refund or a free change. Fees: Since tax rates and exchange rates may vary, many web sites give different figures for the cost of rescheduling and canceling in rupees. Given these variances, no figure is provided here. However, the precise fee will appear in your ETS account once the process begins.

  How to reschedule or cancel:

1. Login to your ETS account.
2. Go into your registration and find your test reservation.
3. Choose between rescheduling and canceling.
4. Check out the details regarding charges or refunds.
5. Proceed with the changes and save the confirmation email.

If you are not ready yet, then rescheduling the test to take place way before your deadline could help you. Most of the time, knowing your date to retake the test helps lessen stress.

Refer to the official ETS website for updated information about availability. The following is the procedure:

1. Visit ets.org/toefl and click on the Register link.
2. Make or log into an ETS account. The name in your account should be identical to the identification that you’ll have on test day.
3. Click "Register/Find Test Centers, Dates."
4. Choose your format: test centre or Home Edition.
5. Select your country and city. For a test centre, you will see centres and calendar dates. For Home Edition, you will see available dates and time slots.
6. Pick a date and centre (or slot) that works for you.
7. Add score recipients. ETS lets you choose institutions to receive your scores; check how many are included in your fee.
8. Pay the test fee and wait for the confirmation. Your booking is complete only after the payment is successful.
9. Save your confirmation and check the ID requirements for test day.

Phone registration is also offered by ETS for students who prefer it. Check the ETS India contact details on the official site.

The best date is not a fixed month. It depends on your own timeline. Work backwards from your deadline.

Rule of thumb: Plan to make your initial attempt 8-10 weeks before your application deadlines. This will give you time for your scores to arrive and, if required, another chance.

Also, look to see if your university or scholarship program has an earlier deadline for the English test than the overall application deadline.

ETS does not publish a month-by-month list of busy periods, so we do not claim numbers here. But the logic is simple.

The demand will increase when a lot of students are requesting scores. Generally this is around the busy periods when a lot of students are applying for their main admissions (autumn, January) or scholarships and visas.

Why early booking helps:

• Test centre seats are limited on each date.
• Popular dates in big cities can fill up sooner.
• Booking early gives you more choices for date, city and format.
• You manage the timing if a retake is necessary.

If your dates are sold out, you might want to look into different cities, different dates, or try the Home Edition.

On 21 January 2026, ETS introduced the biggest update to the TOEFL iBT in years. Here are the confirmed changes.

The new test feels different from the older format. Here is a clear way to separate what is new from what came before. Changes proven in the test:

• Adaptive Reading and Listening. In this part, the test adapts to your level according to your results in Part 1.
• New scoring system. Now you can get from 1 to 6 section and overall scores, as well as 0-120 overall scores.
• New tasks. Speaking is changed and Writing contains new tasks.Shorter, more focused experience. ETS describes the test as under two hours.
• Faster results. Scores are expected within 72 hours.

What stays similar to the earlier format:

• Four skills: Reading, Listening, Speaking and Writing.
• Registration via your ETS account.
• Choice of test centre or Home Edition.
• Free score reports to a set number of institutions at registration; extra reports cost more.

How this affects you:

• Use updated practice material. Old books may not match the new tasks.
• Check your university's score requirement. Some list 0-120 scores, some list 1-6 bands, and some list both. According to ETS, either of these two options provides the institutions with the information that they require.
• If the university has not refreshed its webpage, get in touch with the admissions department of the university.

Finding TOEFL Test Dates that Are Available

Here is a very easy way for you to book your desired date.

Step 1 - Select your desired testing period.

1. Check both formats. Compare test centre dates and Home Edition slots in the same window.
2. Compare centres. If your city shows several centres, choose the one that is easy to reach and offers a comfortable time.
3. Look at several months. Do not stop at the first date you see.
4. Book as soon as you are sure. Good dates can disappear.
5. Keep checking. If your preferred date is full, check again later, as seats can reappear after cancellations.
6. Have a backup. Note a second date or format in case your first choice falls through.

You can take the TOEFL iBT in two ways. The test content and scoring are the same for both. What differs is the environment and scheduling.

Which should you choose?

• Pick the test centre if you want a distraction-free setup and no worry about technical problems.
• Pick Home Edition if you need flexibility, have a quiet room and meet the technical requirements.
• Before choosing Home Edition, check that your target universities and any visa process accept it.

• Start with your deadlines. Find the date your score must reach each university.
• Allocate sufficient preparation time. Don't choose any available test date.
• Allow time for a retake. Make sure to know the ETS policy for retakes.
• Know how long score reporting takes. ETS states 72 hours delivery, but give yourself some leeway.
• Register early during peak times. Months preceding important admissions deadlines are usually the most competitive ones.
• Pick the most convenient testing center or Home Edition. Being relaxed will benefit your performance during the exam.
• Pick your score recipients early. Changing your choices later may lead to additional charges.
• Consider score validity period. TOEFL scores are valid for 2 years only.
• Take a practice test before applying. It will help you understand whether you are ready to take the test.

The best strategy to solve TOEFL Exam dates for 2026- 2027 is to go backwards and begin by looking at your deadlines, and after that, find out live test dates from the ETS site and make bookings for the test dates you prefer. Feel free to opt for either the Test Centre and Home Edition, give some time for retesting if necessary, and arm yourself with the latest TOEFL preparation material since the test has changed in 2026.
