IELTS Eligibility Criteria 2026: Age Limit, Qualification and Requirements

Can you take IELTS? Almost certainly, yes. There’s no minimum degree, no required marks, and no upper age limit. IELTS is not recommended for anyone under 16, and in India you’ll need a valid passport to register. The harder question is usually a different one: what score do you need? That depends on where you’re applying.
This guide covers IELTS eligibility criteria 2026 for Indian students, graduates, and working professionals. It also explains where “eligible to take the test” ends and “eligible for your university, job or visa” begins.
Who Can Take the IELTS Exam?
Anyone who wants to prove their English for study, work or migration. IELTS does not discriminate on the grounds of gender, nationality or background. The choice of an IELTS exam format depends on your target.

Minimum Age Requirement for IELTS
The official position is that IELTS is open to all but not recommended for under-16s. Many websites present 16 as a hard rule. It’s better described as a recommendation. One practical reason: scores stay valid for two years, so a very young test taker’s result may expire before it’s useful.
There’s no maximum age. Plenty of people take IELTS in their 40s and 50s for migration.

Is There Any Educational Qualification Required for IELTS?
No. You don’t need a degree, a diploma or a minimum percentage. A student who has just finished school and a postgraduate with ten years of experience sit the same test.
IELTS Eligibility for Indian Students
Indian candidates follow the same rules as everyone else, with one India-specific point: registration here requires a valid passport as ID. Aadhaar and PAN cards are not accepted. If your passport hasn’t arrived yet, don’t book a date. Your passport must also be valid on test day.

IELTS Eligibility After 10th and 12th
Can I Take IELTS After Class 10?
Technically there’s no educational barrier. However, the Class 10 student would be younger than 16 years old, which would not come within the recommended age group. Unless a school, exchange programme or specific institution asks for it, waiting is usually the smarter move. Check with the test centre if you’re under 16 and have a genuine requirement.
IELTS Eligibility After Class 12
Fine. Many students take IELTS right after Class 12 to apply for undergraduate programmes abroad. You don’t need your results or a particular stream. Just be sure the timing works: your score must still be valid when you apply.
IELTS Requirements for Graduates
Same as everyone else. Graduates usually take IELTS Academic for postgraduate study, or General Training if the goal is migration. Your degree doesn’t change your eligibility, but it can affect the score a course asks for.
