Frequently Asked Questions
IELTS Academic & General Test Dates
IELTS exists in two forms of tests, and choosing the appropriate one should be done prior to checking dates.
IELTS Academic is used by those who want to enroll in universities/colleges in order to receive degrees or who need some certification of English language proficiency as part of the registration process of professionals.
IELTS General Training is intended for those who plan working/training/migrating in English-speaking countries or studying in lower than degree level courses.
Listening and Speaking tests are similar in both cases. However, the Reading and Writing tests differ as the latter uses more academic texts and data-oriented tasks, and the former uses general contexts for everyday and workplace use.
Confused with the choice? Ask your university/employer/immigration body about the requirement. Choosing the wrong test type can mean taking the exam again, which costs time and money. Our counsellors can help you confirm this before you book. You can also read our IELTS Exam Details guide for a full breakdown.
Keep in mind that test date availability for IELTS Academic and General Training may not be the same. Therefore, make sure to find out test date availability for your specific test type.
IELTS Computer-Delivered vs Paper-Based Test Dates
Both computer-delivered and paper-based versions of IELTS have been available for some time, but now there are changes taking place in India. As per IDP Education, the paper-based IELTS test will not be available in India from August 2026, and from September 2026, IELTS will be available on a computer. Currently, we have two options:
- IELTS on Computer: Listening, Reading, and Writing sections are taken on a computer, and Speaking is taken on a computer.
- IELTS on Computer (Writing on Paper): Listening and Reading sections are taken on a computer, and Writing is done on paper.
IDP Education has clearly mentioned that test content, test difficulty level, and scoring are unchanged; only the mode of test is different. The availability of the tests depends upon your location and test center. So, always verify whether the tests are available at your location or not when you are booking your test. If you were preparing exclusively for pen and paper, then now is the time to get accustomed
How to Check IELTS Exam Dates and Book a Test
Booking is quite an easy task if you follow the right order. The steps are given below:
- Decide on your test type. It may be IELTS Academic or IELTS General Training. If you require UKVI version, then confirm that you really need the said version.
- Decide on the location of test centre. It can be any convenient city that you can reach easily on the day of test. Travelling far away from your location on the day before can be stressful for you.
- Look out for dates and timings of test centre. You will see the availability dates and time slots in the online booking system for the format that you have selected. Try considering several dates rather than just selecting the first one.
- Check the cost and identification requirements. Cost of test will be indicated on the booking page. Verify your identification requirements for the test which will mostly be your passport and its validity.
- Register yourself. Enter the required details carefully and pay the cost.
- Take confirmation of your test. It would be good to have the confirmation of your test which will include the test date, time and test venue.
- Ready to start planning after finalizing your date? Our IELTS training classes can assist you in formulating a strategy based on it.

IELTS Exam Registration and Booking Deadlines
There is no set deadline for everyone, since registration deadlines differ depending on format, centre, and slot. Rather, what is important to note is that there are only a finite number of seats, and preferred slots become unavailable quickly. A few helpful tips include:
- Check the availability of seats well in advance; do not wait until the time of your application deadline.
- Make sure to read through the terms of registration before you make the payment, such as cutoffs, rescheduling policy and refunds.
- Verify your documents; all personal information must match perfectly in every document.
- Allow a buffer period. It takes time for the results to be released and you may need to retake the test if necessary.
It is for this reason that IELTS test booking is better made in advance.

How to Choose the Best IELTS Exam Date
The most suitable date is not the earliest one. It is the one that is balanced with your preparation and deadlines. Consider the following factors:
- Required time of preparation: Don't underestimate the number of hours you need. An unsuitable deadline may affect your final score.
- Required target band score: The higher the target, the more preparation is needed (especially Writing and Speaking sections).
- Deadlines of university applications: Work backwards from the latest deadline of your application. Include time for the results and possibly a retake of the exam.
- Visa timeline: If your visa application requires an IELTS score, ensure the score is ready before your visa application.
- Personal timeline: Professionals should avoid weeks with many deadlines, trips, and family events. Students should avoid clashing with the college exams.
Simple calculation method: Write down your deadline, deduct time for results and possibly for retaking the test, and deduct the required time of preparation.
How Much Time Is Needed to Prepare for IELTS?
There is no one-size-fits-all answer. The time you need depends on:
- Your current level of English
- Your target band score
- How consistently you can practise each week
- Learning style and feedback frequency
If you already use English in your daily life, then it will be wise for you to choose a shorter plan. If you are at a lower level or are looking to achieve a higher band score, then you might have to opt for a longer plan. Continuous practice along with feedback proves more useful than lengthy but sporadic sessions. Make sure to take a full-length practice test before setting a date for your IELTS exam. This will give you an accurate idea about your current status and will help you set a realistic date.
IELTS Exam Format and Time Duration
There are four skills that you have to prepare for IELTS:
- Listening: About 30 minutes. You hear recordings and answer questions.
- Reading: 60 minutes. Passages differ between Academic and General Training.
- Writing: 60 minutes. Two tasks, with different task types for Academic and General Training.
- Speaking: About 11 to 14 minutes. Face-to-face talk with an examiner.
The total test time would take about 2 hours and 45 minutes. The Speaking test can be separate from other parts of the exam. Most candidates tend to concentrate on only one or two parts of the test and forget about others. This happens because band score in each part of the test is calculated as an average score of all four parts. You can estimate your result with our IELTS Score Calculator.
