PTE Speaking and Writing Syllabus with Marks
The current Speaking and Writing section includes these nine question types:
| Question type | What you do | Skills assessed |
|---|---|---|
| Read Aloud | Read a displayed text into the microphone. | Speaking, Reading |
| Repeat Sentence | Listen to a sentence and repeat it. | Speaking, Listening |
| Describe Image | Describe the information shown in an image. | Speaking |

| Write Essay | Write an essay in response to a prompt. | Writing |
The score that will be allocated for each task is dictated by the test item itself. With respect to spoken responses, these items can be scored based on various factors, including their content, fluency, and pronunciation.
With respect to writing tasks, several parameters can include content, form, grammar, vocabulary and organisation amongst others. Finally, integrated tasks could offer scores for more than just one skill.
PTE Reading Syllabus with Marks
The Reading section has five question types:
| Question type | What it assesses |
|---|---|
| Reading and Writing: Fill in the Blanks | Choosing words that fit a passage, using vocabulary and grammar in context. |
| Multiple Choice, Multiple Answers | Understanding and evaluating a passage; more than one option may be correct. |
| Reorder Paragraphs | Understanding how ideas connect and arranging text in a logical order. |
| Reading: Fill in the Blanks | Understanding vocabulary, grammar, and meaning in context. |
| Multiple Choice, Single Answer | Identifying the correct answer from a passage. |
Scoring depends on the task. Some reading items allow partial credit when only some selections are correct; others are scored against a correct answer. For multiple-answer questions, incorrect selections can affect the score, so choose options based on the passage rather than guessing broadly. See Pearson’s Reading format guide for current task instructions.
PTE Listening Syllabus with Marks
| Question type | What it assesses |
|---|---|
| Summarize Spoken Text | Understanding an audio recording and writing its main ideas concisely. |
| Multiple Choice, Multiple Answers | Listening for key information and selecting all correct options. |
| Fill in the Blanks | Listening accurately and completing a transcript with missing words. |
| Highlight Correct Summary | Identifying the written summary that best matches the recording. |
| Multiple Choice, Single Answer | Understanding a recording and selecting the correct answer. |
| Select Missing Word | Following the meaning and structure of a recording to identify its ending. |
| Highlight Incorrect Words | Comparing a displayed transcript with the audio and identifying mismatches. |
| Write from Dictation | Listening carefully and typing the sentence you hear. |
These tasks assess listening comprehension, but some also use other skills. For example, Summarize Spoken Text requires writing, while Write from Dictation also tests spelling and accurate written recall. Depending on the task, scoring may consider correctness, word choice, spelling, or the quality of a written response. Pearson’s Listening format guide describes the individual tasks.
PTE Academic Exam Pattern 2026
PTE Academic is a computer-based English language proficiency test that consists of the examinee completing Speaking and Writing, Reading and Listening tasks on a computer in a test centre. The question types require a variety of ways to respond, including speaking into a microphone, typing answers, choosing answers and reordering text.
Pearson’s current test format includes 9 Speaking and Writing, 5 Reading and 8 Listening question types. The number of individual questions may vary across a test, so quoting a total question number should not be considered an accurate planning parameter. The test takes approximately two hours, with each section’s duration varying depending on the test.
After completing the test, you will receive a Score Report with your Overall Score and a score for each communicative skill. According to Pearson, test results are usually available to view within two days of taking the test; however, results can sometimes be later.
PTE Exam Duration and Number of Questions
| Detail | Current information |
|---|---|
| Test duration | Approximately 2 hours |
| Sections | Speaking and Writing, Reading, Listening |
| Question types | 22 in total: 9, 5, and 8 across the three sections |
| Number of individual questions | May vary by test |
| Delivery | Computer-based |
For the latest timings, refer to Pearson’s official PTE Academic page. Avoid planning around question counts from older guides, particularly those published before the August 2026 update.

PTE Academic Scoring System
PTE Academic utilizes a 10-90 score range. On the Score Report, you will find the overall score and scores for the four communicative skills: Speaking, Writing, Reading, and Listening. The Score Report may also include scores for various enabling skills such as grammar, oral fluency, pronunciation, spelling, vocabulary, and written discourse, where appropriate.
The overall score is not an average of the four communicative skill scores or a percentage of the total score. The overall score reflects your performance across all scoring items. Some items are scored in only one communicative skill, whereas some items contribute to more than one communicative skill score. For immigration or visa purposes, you must contact the relevant authority to confirm the score required.

PTE Syllabus 2025: Section-Wise Preparation Tips
How to Prepare for Speaking and Writing
- Speak in a clear manner with a consistent pace, without focusing on speed.
- For Read Aloud, use punctuation for guidance regarding pauses and practice new vocabulary.
- For Repeat Sentence, pay attention to meaning and groupings of words, but not necessarily to each individual word.
- For Describe Image, pay attention to the main idea, comparison, and 1-2 supporting details.
- For Retell Lecture and Summarize Group Discussion, take short notes regarding the main points of the discussion. Do not try to remember exact words; paraphrase.
- For Respond to a Situation, identify whom you need to address and what is expected from you in this particular situation.
- For writing tasks, plan your main idea prior to typing and make sure to have some time to revise grammar and spelling.
Examples: Describe a chart – begin with what is described and an overview of the trend shown. Then include the most relevant comparison/figure mentioned. Discuss a Summary – mention the common theme between speakers and their individual contributions.

How to Prepare for Reading
- Read regularly and practice identifying a passage’s main idea, supporting points, and transitions.
- For fill-in-the-blank questions, check both grammar and meaning. Read the completed sentence aloud mentally to see whether it sounds natural.
- For Reorder Paragraphs, look for linking words, references such as “this” or “they,” and ideas that introduce or conclude a topic.
- In multiple-choice tasks, read the question carefully and return to the passage for evidence.
- Practice managing time so one difficult item does not slow you down across the section.
How to Prepare for Listening
- Practise listening to a range of English speakers and note the central idea, examples, and contrasts.
- For summaries, write down keywords and relationships between ideas rather than full sentences.
- For Fill in the Blanks and Write from Dictation, practise spelling and common word forms alongside listening accuracy.
- For Highlight Incorrect Words, follow the audio while reading the text and mark differences as you hear them.
- Use timed practice to get comfortable responding after the audio plays once.
Use Pearson’s official preparation resources and current question-type guides for examples and practice materials.
PTE Academic vs PTE Core Syllabus
You can’t switch between them because they’re completely separate exams with distinct aims. While both measure English proficiency, PTE Academic is most commonly taken for university admissions and other academic/professional/migration reasons. PTE Core is more generally for assessing English proficiency and is accepted for specific Canadian immigration/citizenship purposes. Confirm what’s needed from your institution/immigration authorities before signing up.
For instance, if you’re sitting the PTE Academic exam, then you’ll have tasks like Retell Lecture, Summarize Group Discussion, Write Essay, etc. If you take PTE Core, these will change accordingly (e.g., tasks involving Write Email).
According to Pearson, there were August 2025 updates applied to PTE Academic & PTE Academic (UKVI) – but PTE Core was left unscathed. See here for details.
