GMAT Exam Syllabus 2026: Complete Guide to Sections and Topics

If you're preparing for an MBA or master's in management, understanding what the GMAT exam syllabus includes will help you know what the test will cover and what it no longer covers.
The GMAT now has 3 sections: Quantitative Reasoning, Verbal Reasoning, and Data Insights. The total duration of the test is 2 hours and 15 minutes, consisting of 64 questions. Each section lasts 45 minutes. There are no essays to worry about, as the Analytical Writing Assessment has been removed from the exam.
Knowing the syllabus will help you:
Avoid wasting time on topics that won’t come up in the test
Understand where you are good at and where you need to improve
Split your revision time into different sections
It also means that the test is adaptive (the difficulty will change depending on how you are doing). Knowing what you need to revise will also make a difference to how the test feels.
GMAT Quantitative Reasoning Syllabus
There are 21 questions in the Quant section and you have 45 minutes. All questions are problem-solving. all in problem-solving format. It tests arithmetic and algebra in applied, real-world settings. Advanced mathematics isn’t required. What the test rewards is clear thinking and speed. Geometry-specific content is no longer part of this section.

Mathematical Problem-Solving Topics
Most Quant questions appear in the form of short word problems; however, the ability to convert English into equations is critical. Typical topics include:
- Rate, time and distance
- Work and combined-work problems
- Mixtures and concentrations
- Simple and compound interest, profit and loss
- Overlapping sets
- Basic counting and probability within applied problems

GMAT Verbal Reasoning Syllabus
The Verbal section has 23 questions in 45 minutes and tests two skills: reading closely and reasoning carefully. Sentence Correction has been removed, so older books and videos built around it are out of date.If someone asks, “Is grammar part of the GMAT?”, the answer is no, not as a direct question type. Clear English still helps you read well, though.
Reading Comprehension
You read passages on topics from business, science, social science and the humanities. Questions ask about:
- The main idea and the author’s purpose
- Specific details stated in the passage
- Inferences the passage supports
- The structure and tone of the argument
- You don’t need background knowledge of the subject. Everything you need is in the passage.
Critical Reasoning
Short arguments are followed by one question. You might be asked to:
- Strengthen or weaken the argument
- Find the assumption it depends on
- Spot a flaw in the reasoning
- Evaluate or explain a situation
- Complete the argument
GMAT Data Insights Syllabus
Data Insights has 20 questions in 45 minutes. It replaced the older Integrated Reasoning section and tests how well you read and use data, a skill business schools care about. It has five question types.
Data Sufficiency
You will be provided with a problem statement along with two options. The task is to determine whether these options provide sufficient data for answering it. It may not be that easy at first, so start training yourself from the beginning.
Multi-Source Reasoning
Data is located across several tabs, e.g. emails, tables and short passages. You have to analyze the data in order to solve problems.
Table Analysis
A sortable data table comes with statements to judge as true or false. Sorting the table smartly saves time.
Graphics Interpretation
You analyze a diagram or graph like a scatter diagram, bar graph, or line graph and finish statements by choosing from drop-down menus.
Two-Part Analysis
One problem asks for two linked answers, picked from a shared list of options. Quant-style and verbal-style reasoning both appear here.
Mathematical Problem-Solving Topics
Many Quant questions arrive as short word problems, so the real skill is turning English into equations. Common themes include:
- Rate, time and distance
- Work and combined-work problems
- Mixtures and concentrations
- Simple and compound interest, profit and loss
- Overlapping sets
- Basic counting and probability within applied problems
GMAT Syllabus: Section-Wise Questions and Timing
| Section | Questions | Time | Section score range | Question types |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Quantitative Reasoning | 21 | 45 min | 60–90 | Problem solving |
| Verbal Reasoning | 23 | 45 min | 60–90 | Reading comprehension, critical reasoning |
| Data Insights | 20 | 45 min | 60–90 | Data sufficiency, multi-source reasoning, table analysis, graphics interpretation, two-part analysis |
| Total | 64 | 2 hrs 15 min | 205–805 total |
Common pitfall – the number of questions does not equal the weighting in scoring. Even though verbal requires the most questions to answer, all 3 sections are weighted equally. You would make a mistake by allocating your revision time depending on the number of questions.
There is also an option to choose the order of the sections, mark questions to come back to, and change up to 3 answers per section. There is also an optional 10-minute break.

A checklist form of the syllabus would be helpful because the long list of topics can be converted into a list that can be ticked off. Print the list out, check off your mastery level in each topic weekly. Your study plan then follows your actual gaps.
How to Prepare for the GMAT Exam Based on the Syllabus
- Take a diagnostic test so that you understand your level in each section
- Convert the syllabus into a checklist and mark topics as weak, medium and good
- Focus on improving basics. Learn your basic arithmetic, algebra and reading skills before moving to time bound sets.
- Practice topic-wise. Try different sets everyday. One day try critical reasoning and the next day data sufficiency.
- Analyse your errors. Know whether your errors were due to lack of knowledge or just being careless.
- Time your practice. Once you are confident in your accuracy, try practicing in 45 minute slots.
- Take full mock tests. Practice completing the full test within the time frame (2 hours 15 mins). Practice choosing your sections.
- Revise regularly. Try revising your weak areas at least once per week.
GMAT Syllabus for Beginners
Starting from zero is fine. Begin this way:
- Read the format first. Spend your first day just learning the three sections and question types.
- Take a baseline test. Don’t worry about the score. You’re looking for patterns.
- Find your weak areas. Check which section felt slowest and which question types you guessed on.
- Start with one weak section. Build confidence there before widening your plan.
- Be consistent. Short daily sessions usually beat occasional marathons.
It all depends on how much time you have before the test, and how good you are in math at first. If someone is good at math, but not familiar with critical reasoning, then he/she will plan his/her preparation accordingly.
