GMAT Eligibility 2026: Age Limit, Qualification & Requirements

To be eligible to take the GMAT 2026, you must be at least 18 years of age. Candidates aged between 13 and 17 can take the test only at a test centre with written permission from a parent or guardian. GMAC’s eligibility rules do not require a degree, a minimum percentage or work experience. Your ID must be valid and match your registration exactly. Admission to a business school is a separate matter, because each school sets its own criteria.
Overview
Most students expect a long list of conditions, like they see for other entrance exams. The GMAT is simpler. GMAC, the body that owns the exam, keeps its own rules short. The harder part is what your target MBA or master’s programme asks for. So there are two separate questions:
- Can I register for and take the GMAT? This is exam eligibility, set by GMAC.
- Will this school accept me? This is admission eligibility, set by each university or B-school.
Keep these apart while planning. Many students lose time because they mix them up.

GMAT Age Limit 2026
Minimum age. You must be at least 18 to schedule and take the GMAT.
Candidates aged 13 to 17. You can still take the exam, but only at a test centre. You need to give GMAC written proof of your parent’s or guardian’s consent before you schedule.
Upper age limit. GMAC’s policy does not set one. A person working professionally at an age between their thirties or forties needs to register just like a student in their final year.
Policy reference. The age rule sits under “Eligibility Requirements” in the GMAT Exam Policies and Procedures. GMAC says rules are updated from time to time, so check the page again close to your booking date.

GMAT Educational Qualification 2026
Is graduation compulsory?
Not for taking the exam. GMAC’s eligibility list has no degree requirement. You do not need to have finished graduation to register.
In practice, though, most programmes that accept the GMAT, such as MBA, Master in Management and Master in Finance, ask for a bachelor’s degree at admission. The GMAT lets you sit the test. The school decides whether you can enrol.
Can final-year students take the GMAT?
Yes. Since the exam has no degree requirement, final-year students can register. Many Indian students take it in their final year or soon after graduating, so they can apply with a score ready.
Check your target programme’s timeline first. Some ask for a completed degree by the start date, not at the time of application.
Is a minimum percentage required?
GMAC does not list one. You cannot be turned away from the exam because of your marks.
Schools are different. Some look closely at your academic record, others weigh work experience and your score more. We have not listed any university’s cut-offs here. Take those only from the programme’s own admissions page.

Whether online GMAT scores are accepted | GMAC says candidates must confirm whether a school accepts test-centre scores, online scores or both |
Application deadlines | GMAC advises leaving at least 20 days before a deadline for your official score to be delivered |
GMAT Eligibility 2026 for Indian Students
The rules are the same for Indian candidates as for everyone else. There is no separate “India eligibility”. What changes is the ID check and how you plan around study destinations.
Registration basics:
- Create an account on mba.com and fill in your details exactly as they appear on your ID.
- Choose test centre or online delivery.
- Pay the exam fee and confirm your appointment.
Accepted identification. GMAC says ID requirements vary by country. The common point is the international passport, which is always required if you test outside your country of citizenship. For India, open the “Select Location” dropdown on the ID Requirements page and read the India entry. Do not rely on a blog’s list, including ours, for the final answer.
Points Indian applicants often miss:
- Your name on the ID must be in the Roman alphabet and match your mba.com profile exactly, including order of names.
- Your date of birth must match what you entered when creating the account.
- Expired IDs, photocopies, student or employee IDs, and selfies are listed as unacceptable.
- If your ID does not match, GMAC says you can forfeit the exam fee.
Studying MBA abroad after the GMAT. The GMAT is accepted by many business schools worldwide, but acceptance depends on the programme. Confirm the following on each school’s website before you book:
- Whether it accepts the GMAT, the GRE or both
- Whether it accepts the online version
- Which GMAT edition it recognises
- Its application deadlines

GMAT Work Experience Requirements 2026
Is work experience compulsory?
No. GMAC’s eligibility rules mention no work experience requirement for the exam.
Can freshers take the GMAT?
Yes. A fresher can register and take the exam like anyone else.
Exam eligibility vs MBA admission
This is where the real difference shows up. Many full-time MBA programmes expect or strongly prefer work experience, and executive programmes usually ask for more. Some master’s programmes (Management, Finance, Analytics) are designed for students with little or no experience.
You can still do the GMAT if you are a fresh graduate, but some MBAs will ask for two or three years of experience. Firstly look at the criteria for the programme and decide when you should sit the test.
GMAT Exam Attempts and Retake Rules 2026
These are the rules in GMAC’s policy as of August 12, 2026:
- You can attempt the test a maximum of 5 times in any 12 month rolling window. This includes both test centre and online attempts.
- You cannot attempt the test again within 16 days of sitting it previously (online or test centre).
- If your score is cancelled by GMAC due to issues with the test or policy breach then this attempt will count in your 12 month limit .
- Missed appointment: you can book again without waiting the full 16 days, but there is a 24-hour wait and you pay the full fee.
- Perfect score: if you earn the maximum Total Score of 805, you must wait at least 5 years to test again.
- Account deletion: If you request GMAC to delete your account, you have to wait for at least 5 years before taking another test.
- Multiple accounts: You cannot create multiple accounts using a new email address in order to circumvent any of these restrictions.
A note on “rolling 12 months”. This is not for a calendar year. GMAC just look back over the past 12 months, and the number of attempts cannot exceed 5. There is also no mention of any lifetime limit on their policy page. There are some older pages and third party sites which mention a limit, but as always stick to the live policy from GMAC.
Documents Required for GMAT Registration 2026
Identification (needed on exam day):

- Original document, not a photocopy
- Recent, recognisable photo and your signature
- Name, date of birth and country of citizenship that exactly match what you used to schedule

Account and registration information:
- Your mba.com account, created with your legal name and date of birth
- A working email address you check regularly

- Any changes to personal details must be made at least 72 hours before your exam
Additional requirements where applicable:
- Candidates under 18: written parent or guardian consent, before scheduling, for a test-centre exam

GMAT Eligibility vs MBA Admission Eligibility
Factor | GMAT exam eligibility (GMAC) | MBA admission eligibility (the school) |
|---|---|---|
Who sets it | GMAC | Each university or B-school |
Age | 18+, or 13–17 with consent at a test centre | Depends on programme |
Academic qualification | No degree requirement listed | Usually a bachelor’s degree, sometimes with stream or marks conditions |
Minimum percentage | Not listed | Varies by school |
Work experience | Not required | Often expected or preferred, especially for executive MBAs |
Test score | Not applicable | Programmes set their own score expectations |
English and other tests | Not part of exam eligibility | Some programmes ask for extra tests or interviews |
Result of meeting it | You can take the exam | You may be considered; admission is never guaranteed |
Meeting the GMAT requirements will not guarantee you a place on the course. The score is just one element of your application, alongside your academic background, experience, essays and interviews.
